Since commit 5fc10e76fa2a9 in linux v6.5-rc1, the kernel does a
recursive make call to add the --no-print-directory flag if it is not
set.
Buildroot sets MAKEOVERRIDES empty, which causes none of the
command-line overrides to be propagated to sub-makes. This only goes one
level deep, so it is not a problem. However, if the user sets
MAKEOVERRIDES in their environment, the environment _does_ get
propagated down to sub-makes. Therefore, the recursive call from within
the kernel will not get any of the command-line overrides we give it.
As a result, INSTALL_HDR_PATH will not get passed down to the kernel's
sub-make, thereby breaking the installation to staging.
Note that if Buildroot itself does a sub-make call (e.g. because O= is
set, or umask is different), --no-print-directory is already added so
the issue doesn't occur.
Set --no-print-directory explicitly, which avoids the kernel's sub-make
call, which preserves INSTALL_HDR_PATH. It is only really needed for the
staging install, since the local install in _CONFIGURE_CMDS just sets it
to the default value. For consistency though, set it there as well.
Setting --no-print-directory when it is not needed doesn't hurt.

Buildroot is a simple, efficient and easy-to-use tool to generate embedded Linux systems through cross-compilation. The documentation can be found in docs/manual. You can generate a text document with 'make manual-text' and read output/docs/manual/manual.text. Online documentation can be found at https://buildroot.org/docs.html To build and use the buildroot stuff, do the following: 1) run 'make menuconfig' 2) select the target architecture and the packages you wish to compile 3) run 'make' 4) wait while it compiles 5) find the kernel, bootloader, root filesystem, etc. in output/images You do not need to be root to build or run buildroot. Have fun! Buildroot comes with a basic configuration for a number of boards. Run 'make list-defconfigs' to view the list of provided configurations. Please feed suggestions, bug reports, insults, and bribes back to the buildroot mailing list: buildroot@buildroot.org You can also find us on #buildroot on OFTC IRC. If you would like to contribute patches, please read https://buildroot.org/manual.html#submitting-patches
